Upcoming Moonbounce Live Streaming Event

The Event

Multidisciplinary artist Daniela De Paulis is organizing a live moonbounce event in Scotland on the Isle of Lewis that will be held on the evening of February 8th 2020 as part of the Hebridean Dark Skies Festival. Wow! Signal Live will livestream the event with a panel of scientists and artists.


How to Watch Live

The scheduled time is 21:00 GMT. That means it will start at 4 P.M. on the East Coast of the USA, and 1 Pm on the West Coast. The live streaming event may start a little earlier than the live event. More details will be announced soon.

Following the live event, the audio from the panel discussion will be made available on our regular podcast feed at this site.

Burst 14 - Jason Hessels on the Repeating Fast Radio Burst

We talk to radio astronomer Jason W.T. Hessels, corresponding author on a recent paper in Nature describing a repeating fast radio burst.  We asked Dr. Hessels about the discovery of the repeating burst, why his team believes they are from all one source outside our galaxy, what some of the proposed theories to explain the burst are, and efforts to follow up on the detection.

Dr. Jason W.T. Hessels

Jason Hessels is an Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy.  His work focusses on studying the properties of radio pulsars and exploring other very short transient signals from our galaxy and beyond.  To do this, he uses the world's largest radio telescopes, including the 305-m dish in Arecibo and the Dutch Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR)

A recent paper, Discrete Steps in Dispersion Measures of Fast Radio Bursts, has generated a lot of excitement. Paul Carr reviews the basic facts about the 11 known FRBs and what this strange pattern might imply.

Update: Petroff, et. al., Finding the Source of Perytons at the Parkes Radio Telescope

Further Update: Five new FRBs were recently reported.  Only one of these five (130626) has a Dispersion Measure close to a multiple of 187.5, so it could just be a fluke, but FRB 150418 was also reported, and it's DM is 776.2, which is close to 4 x 187.5.

This podcast is named after an event that took place on 15 August 1977 at the Ohio State Big Ear radio astronomy observatory. Astronomer Jerry Ehman noticed a signal that looked exactly like what they were looking for - an ET radio beacon. Was it?

We talk to Dr. Robert S. "Bob" Dixon, who was instrumental in bringing the Big Ear instrument to bear on the SETI problem, in his very first podcast interview. Among other things, he tells us about the experimental Argus array, which if built full scale, could help us catch a reoccurrence of the Wow! Signal.
